Pumpkins: for dogs and weight loss


 It’s February and I’m just getting to the pumpkin. I’m several weeks behind, but they are still excellent.

In case you think pumpkins are only good for us, think again! They are good for dogs.

I believe this works for people too. The fiber in the pumpkin along with the other nutrient benefits can help to fill our tummies. As with most vegetables it’s the stuff we put on top that adds the calories and sugar.}
Our fussy doggy got quite rundown by her polar dip in the dugout, so Hubby wanted me to cook her meat and bones. Then a friend who possibly knows more, told me that raw bones are best, partly because the cooked bones break easier into shards and sharp harmful pieces. At this point I prefer to think raw is best because I hate cleaning the big pots! Maybe I should feed her pumpkin…
If what I’ve found  is true, there is 30 calories in a cup of 1 inch cubes. I’m thinking that it isn’t all about  the calories because some foods ‘use’ calories to digest or boost your metabolism. I’m going to eat lots. It gets boring fast, but I’ve tried a very light sprinkle of cinnamon on each side of a 1 inch strip. No sugar. It turns the pumpkin ‘on’.                            Salt quickly becomes over-bearing since the mild pumpkin flavour quickly yields itself to whatever you put on it. The salt makes it taste a lot like …salt. I tried a dab of lime. It was like eating…lime. 
On mayoclinic.com (for weight loss?) they have an interesting recipe for pumpkin soup.
I looked everywhere and came up with the following spice combinations to try in my own pumpkin soup.
I just realized it’s February and I’m finally cooking the pumpkins from last summer. They’ve hidden under a little round table that I have covered with a fancy ‘tablecloth’. They have been dry, well hidden, and not cool at all.
cajun spice, cream
1/2 teaspoon allspice, 2 teaspoons grated ginger, milk, cilantro
2 tsp. curry, 1/2 cup brown sugar, cream and butter, red pepper, 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander, pinch cayenne
cumin, nutmeg
cinnamon, nutmeg


Soup for weight loss…it especially works if you burn the calories necessary to make it from scratch.

I tried the curry one. I tried a couple of others. My problem was that I wanted to use a lot of pumpkin and no dairy (because of the weight loss reason) and by doing this it was too bitter for good eating. I ate it anyway, but Hubby didn’t get past the first bowl. It needs to be tamed with cream or lots of chicken broth which I didn’t use but could have.
The list of food that taste good and have little calories is very short.
