A Series on Log House Building #13

THE CHIMNEY.

This had to be planned from the beginning. Our chimney is high and large. That means a lot of weight that needs to be supported at the ground level.

I wanted to have a wood stove downstairs as well as a wood cook stove upstairs so that meant it would need two separate flues inside.

The insulated bricks are stacked first from the ground up.

We used insulated brick on the initial construction and then plastered on the rocks. Historically real field stone have been used to make chimneys, but lately there is a light-weight pretend version available that looks very realistic. The light ones are easier to install and even have corners cut out of them but of course cost a lot more than hand-picked ones.

We’ve changed something major between these two pictures can you tell?

The result after a final layer of rock and the stove is in place...and the gobs and gobs of plaster are history.

I’m not sure what your major change is. I am either too lazy to check or too tired. Either way, I am still curious. :)

There is something quite different from one picture to the other – it’s in the loft supports that look like big Y’s. One has the timbers going crosswise and horizontal (some of them cracked and made the ‘stand’ crooked even though we had plenty of dowel in the column). The other has a solid timber vertically. We’d surmised that the horizontal ones would shrink evenly with the rest of the house but they started to looke pretty bad and it got changed after things were well set after more than a year.
