The New Hatch

Babies add joy to my life. My 50 chicks are almost 2 weeks old and eating  over a gallon of ground up alfalfa, clovers, and dandelion greens….phew!…a lot of work for me and my blender. These young plants have about an 18% protein content which, if supplemented with a small portion of fishmeal or other […]

The New Chicks

The most amazing things about having a sea of yellow fluff in the chicken house is how much time I can spend there while outside the door the grass keeps growing, the meals go unmade, the phone doesn’t get answered, the sun rise and sets… The mail arrived  at noon with 52 (2 are extra […]

More New Babies

I’m feeling a little crazy and desperate. I wanted to get a better breed for one main purpose: I want them to set on their eggs. Is that too much to ask of a chicken?   ??? Secondly: for laying hens. Since I could only get mixed sexes that means that I have both male and […]

Chick out the News

The chicks were reading the newspaper this morning. They are really picked and up in wings over the latest Luka Rocco Magnotta murder suspect, figuring that  a foot should have been put down on this deal when it was obviously all over the internet before the police took action.”Cheep deal” they say. I assured them […]

Happy chicks playing

They’re eating, drinking, playing, running, sleeping…sorry I can’t help myself. There antics are so sweet. I started feeding them little pieces of green alfalfa, etc. You have to start them young.  The red heat lamp is what is making some of the shot reddish. >https://www.youtube.com/v/Wb7kZmFU8go?version=3&feature=player_detailpage”><param      Be a friend by sharing…

Waiting nervously

I’m still waiting for the mail to arrive at our post office. I had the coop already for them this morning except that I went in to turn the heat lamp on. I’m always a little jittery about getting the temperature just right…30 to 32C. If they get too cold they will all get pneumonia […]
